Brewer Notes

As winter rolls on, we’re excited to announce a little ray of sunshine we’re calling Sun Drift. Sun Drift is brewed with lemon zest, fermented with Brettanomyces yeast, and then blended with black tea.

“This beer’s flavor goes beyond the sum of its ingredients,” says our Brewmaster Jason Perkins. Lemon zest imparts a slightly tart note that’s accompanied by the medley of funky tropical fruit flavors created by the Brettanomyces yeast. After brewing, the beer is blended with Fair Trade Yunnan Black tea from Little Red Cup, of Brunswick, ME. The result evokes the refreshing combination of lemonade and tea, all cruising on a layer of fruit-filled aromatics.

If it sounds like a summer-y beer, that’s because it kinda is. During more than a few long winters, we found ourselves wanting to enjoy a beer that’s light and refreshing. In fact, Mainers are well known for enjoying themselves despite the weather: think, surfing in winter. So we brewed Sun Drift with the idea that it would conjure a little taste of summer, no matter what it looked like outside.

“Whenever possible, we look for ingredients in Maine.” said Jason. “That means getting grain from Maine farmers and tea from a local company like Little Red Cup.”

Family owned since 2009, Little Red Cup sells tea that is certified organic by the USDA, and by Fair Trade USA. The company partners directly with the worker-owned cooperatives that grow and process the tea to reduce the number of steps from field to cup.

Sun Drift is made with local pale malt and local raw oats. It’s hopped with Cascade and Citra, then fermented on a combination of Saccharomyces and Brettanomyces Claussenii.

About the Brewer

"Allagash Brewing Company started in 1995, as a one-man operation in a small corner of a warehouse in Portland, Maine.

Founder Rob Tod had worked in a brewery setting before and recognized a void within the craft brewing movement. While both German and British styles had become prevalent throughout the U.S., the ever-creative Belgian styles were very difficult to find. Through his travels, Tod had sampled many of these unique beers and wanted to share these flavors and traditions with the American drinking public. He assembled a small 15-barrel brewhouse from used equipment and began his quest towards the production of traditional Belgian-style ales.

Rob sold his first batch of beer – the very first Allagash White – in the summer of 1995.  Since that time, Allagash Brewing Company has grown and expanded – now we’re available in 17 states and the District of Columbia.  But we’re still brewing beers on that brewhouse Rob welded together, still aging and bottling specialty beers in the warehouse where the first batches of White were brewed, and still striving to share our interpretations of Belgian-inspired beers."

Now On Tap: Stone I'm Peach Double IPA

Stone-Im-Peach-Double-IPA-Cans-min.jpg

We're not normally hug fans of fruit beers - but this one caught our eye. A Double IPA with peaches - can it be good? The answer is - yes. This complex brew has slight hints of peach on citrus notes - not overwhelmingly peach, but a pleasant addition, mellowing the hops a bit. Stop in and try this brew from Stone Brewing before it's gone!

Brewer Notes

Who wants to kick fruit out of beer? Not us. When done right, adding orange or grapefruit or tangerine can contribute a deeper level of delicious complexity to the beer. In this case, peach was the perfect complement to enhance the substantial bill of hops in this double IPA. May its reign last more than a few terms.
